We are so spoilt. Not only are we getting a radiant heating floor, we are getting a fireplace just for us. Cats love a warm fire. The fireplace is an Isokern Standard Series with a metal chimney system from Earthcore Industries. The fireplace is intended to burn solid wood fuel, propane or natural gas. The fireplace is a prefabricated, refractory, modular masonry fireplace designed for field assembly. The system consists of interlocking precast parts which are glued together with a masonry adhesive to form the complete firebox and smoke dome system. The precast parts use a proprietary mixture of volcanic pumice aggregate and cement. The firebox and smoke dome are designed to be fitted with a traditional cast iron, poker-style throat damper. However, chimney top dampers are an option. The fireplace requires a standard refractory fire brick liner a minimum one and one-eighth inch (1-1/8″) thick be applied to the interior of the firebox.

Rick Artell of Isokern thinks there is a good chance that smoke may not vent well with our open peninsula design. He suggested an in-flue fan to draw smoke up and out. He said that we can add the fan later without issue, we’ll just need to prewire for it during our rough electrical. He also said the flue must be UL Approved or the warranty is void, that only round flues will be UL listed.
